If you have a middle aged to older horse, you may want to consider testing for PPID (Cushing's Disease). They may be showing signs of this disease, or a similar disease, Equine Metabolic Syndrome. Boehringer Ingelheim, a pharmaceutical company, is conducting a free study with Cornell University in which a blood sample is sent in for PPID, insulin, and glucose testing. The only cost to you as an owner would be a small fee for intravenous sampling. To qualify for this opportunity, your horse should not have been previously diagnosed with PPID, and must exhibit one or more of the following signs:
Decreased Shedding
Laminitis (Founder)
Abnormal fat deposits (cresty neck, bulging fat above eyes, fat tailhead, etc.)
Lethargy
Excessive urination or drinking
Easily susceptible to infections
Abnormal sweating
Inappropriate lactation
